Indoor Air Quality Services in Springfield
Indoor air quality is about what your HVAC system circulates through your house all day, and around here that means humidity, mold spores, pollen, and dust riding the same air your family breathes. The EPA estimates indoor air can be two to five times more polluted than outdoor air. In a climate where we keep windows and doors sealed tight for months during the summer, that trapped air recirculates over and over. Summit Air & Heating has helped local families breathe cleaner air since 1985, and indoor air quality is one of the areas we get asked about most.
We evaluate your home’s specific challenges and match them to the right fix, from whole-home dehumidifiers to UV germicidal lights and better filtration. The goal is real improvement, not a stack of expensive add-ons you don’t need.
Why Indoor Air Quality Matters in a Humid Climate
Our climate creates unique indoor air quality challenges:
Extreme humidity: summer humidity here regularly exceeds 80–90%, and your HVAC system alone may not be enough to control it. Excess indoor humidity above 50% promotes mold growth, dust mite reproduction, and that uncomfortable “sticky” feeling even when the AC is running.
Allergens. Pollen, dust mites, pet dander, and mold spores are common indoor allergens in our area. These particles circulate through your ductwork and can trigger allergy and asthma symptoms.
Biological contaminants: bacteria, viruses, and mold can grow inside your HVAC system, particularly on the evaporator coil and in the drain pan where moisture collects. Without treatment, these contaminants are distributed throughout your home every time the system runs.
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), off-gassing from building materials, cleaning products, furniture, and paint contributes to indoor air pollution. In a tightly sealed home, these chemicals accumulate over time.
Our Indoor Air Quality Solutions
Whole-home dehumidifiers: unlike a portable dehumidifier that treats one room, a whole-home dehumidifier integrates with your HVAC system to control humidity throughout your entire home. This is one of the most impactful upgrades we recommend for homes in our climate. Maintaining humidity between 30–50% reduces mold risk, improves comfort, and can actually lower your energy bills because drier air feels cooler. ENERGY STAR-certified dehumidifiers deliver the best balance of moisture removal and energy efficiency.
UV germicidal lights and air purifiers. Installed inside your HVAC system near the evaporator coil, UV-C lights destroy bacteria, mold, and viruses before they can circulate through your home, and whole-home purifiers add another layer against particles and odors. Because this is such a common request in our humid climate, we cover the technologies, the differences between them, and what we recommend on our dedicated UV lights and air purifiers page.
We also install whole-home air filtration that works with your existing system to capture particles, allergens, and odors. Options range from high-efficiency media filters to electronic air cleaners, and choosing the right MERV rating matters: too restrictive and you choke airflow, too loose and the fine particles sail right through. We help you find the balance for your equipment.
Air balancing. If certain rooms in your home are consistently too hot, too cold, or stuffy, the problem may be airflow imbalance. Our technicians measure airflow at each register and adjust dampers, ductwork, and system settings so every room gets consistent airflow.
Duct sealing and repair: leaky ductwork pulls dusty, humid attic air into the system and spreads it through the house. We inspect your duct runs for leaks, then seal gaps, joints, and connections with mastic so your system delivers clean conditioned air instead of attic grime. (Summit handles duct fabrication, sealing, and repair; we do not offer air-duct cleaning.)
Signs Your Home May Have Air Quality Issues
- Persistent musty or stale odors
- Visible mold growth around vents, windows, or bathroom fixtures
- Condensation forming on windows or cold surfaces
- Family members experiencing more allergy or asthma symptoms indoors
- Excessive dust accumulation despite regular cleaning
- Humidity that feels oppressive even with the AC running
If you notice any of these signs, an indoor air quality assessment can help identify the source and the solution.
